Ordinary dark lenses dim everything equally. A polarised lens has a filter inside it that blocks the flat, horizontal light bouncing off roads, water, car bonnets and glass — the glare that makes you squint even while wearing sunglasses.
The practical difference: you can see the road on a bright afternoon drive, read your phone by a pool, and come home without the dull ache behind your eyes. If you drive, it is the single spec worth paying attention to.
You may notice faint rainbow patches when looking at a phone or car screen through them. That is the filter doing its job against the screen's own polarisation — not a fault with the lens.
Warning: looks better in real life
A photo is the least flattering way to see a pair of sunglasses. Here's what it can't show you.
- 1The shine. Metal, crystal details and glossy frames catch the light and move as you move. A still studio photo flattens all of that.
- 2The lens. On a white table a lens looks like a flat dark sheet. On your face, outdoors, you see its depth and tint, and the polarised filter cuts the glare.
- 3On a face, not a table. Shape and size only make sense when they're worn. That's why we film every frame on real people.
- 4Your screen. Every phone shows colour a little differently. The frame in your hand doesn't.
